BN-PN political alliance faces threat from mutual suspicion

Political analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri of Global Asia Consulting suggests that mutual suspicion, rather than third-party interference, poses the primary threat to the cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Zaharuddin notes that while both coalitions need each other for electoral strength, they face a dilemma: BN fears helping build a force that could replace it, while PN risks diluting its unique identity through close cooperation. He describes the relationship as a “marriage of necessity” where survival depends on whether the benefits of joining forces outweigh the costs of competition.

While some observers view the alliance as a temporary tactical arrangement—citing recent seat negotiations in Melaka as a sign of potential friction—Zaharuddin argues that the two coalitions may remain together despite their imperfect compatibility, provided they maintain a common cause or enemy.
