BNB Chain expands capacity and surpasses Solana in DeFi TVL
BNB Chain is undergoing a significant capacity upgrade to increase its target block gas limit to 70 million. Validators began rolling out this transition on September 14, with completion expected by September 15. The upgrade aims to address network congestion, as utilization has consistently exceeded 95%.
This technical move follows the Pasteur hard fork, which introduced the BEP-675 architecture and the BidBlock V2 system. This new structure allows specialized builders to submit pre-executed blocks, which has already resulted in a 28% average increase in gas per block compared to previous methods.
In terms of ecosystem growth, BNB Chain has surpassed Solana in DeFi Total Value Locked (TVL), reaching $5.94 billion as of September 14. This places BNB Chain second in the market behind Ethereum, which maintains a lead with approximately $49.95 billion. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao noted the network's progress against Solana but remarked that overtaking Ethereum remains a “long road.”
