Colombia and Venezuela receive international aid following major earthquakes
International financial institutions are mobilizing aid for Colombia and Venezuela following devastating seismic activity.
In Colombia, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó, has caused significant destruction. Reports indicate between 111 and 132 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, and extensive damage to homes, schools, and hospitals. In response, CAF has donated $500,000, while the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have pledged a combined $700,000 for damage assessment and technical cooperation. The Colombian Association of Scientific Societies (ACSC) has also established 16 collection centers nationwide to gather medical supplies and food.
In Venezuela, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved $1 million for the Venezuela Recovery and Reconstruction Fund to assist with the aftermath of earthquakes that struck in June. This fund, established by CAF, aims to centralize international and private contributions. The June earthquakes in Venezuela resulted in at least 6,125 deaths and caused estimated material damages of $19.6 billion. To manage local relief, the Venezuelan government has implemented a QR code system in La Guaira to track and assist over 34,000 affected families.
