Bánh phu thê of Đình Bảng sold only in pairs, preserving centuries‑old tradition

Bánh phu thê, a traditional Vietnamese wedding cake from Đình Bảng in the Bắc Giang region, is sold exclusively in pairs. The rule that the cake must be bought as a set of two has been observed for centuries and is meant to symbolize marital fidelity and the bond between husband and wife.

The cake’s golden hue comes from glutinous rice flour made from the prized “cái hoa vàng” rice, combined with green papaya strips and a special dye. Legends link the cake to the Lý dynasty, such as a story that Queen Lý Anh Tông sent the cake to troops during a campaign. Today the practice remains a cultural hallmark of the Kinh Bắc area, attracting visitors who seek the authentic paired cakes for wedding celebrations.
