BNT removes prominent hosts amid programming changes

Bulgarian National Television (BNT) is undergoing significant programming changes, resulting in the removal of several prominent hosts from the air. Journalist Georgi Angelov has been removed from his roles as host and editor of 'Istoriya.bg' and the BNT2 program 'Do Evropa i naapred'. BNT stated that the changes are part of a new concept to move away from rotating hosts toward permanent presenters. Additionally, host Diana Lyubenova announced that her program, 'Imate srehta... s Diana Lyubenova', will not be part of the new schedule.

The decisions have sparked widespread controversy and political backlash. A group of scholars, translators, and cultural figures signed an open letter to BNT Program Director Milena Milotinova, expressing concern that the removal of Angelov—a noted translator and historian—could be an attempt to influence how Bulgarian and world history are presented.

Political figures have also reacted. Asen Vassilev of 'Prodaulzhavame Promyanata' called for a hearing with BNT leadership, arguing that Bulgarian history should not be written by those currently in power. Former diplomat Iliyan Vassilev criticized the management and announced a planned protest in front of the broadcaster to defend media independence.
