If Bichette remains with the Mets, he is scheduled to earn $42 million in 2027. Opting out would allow him to enter free agency, though it involves a $5 million buyout and the sacrifice of guaranteed salary. ESPN’s Jeff Passan described the decision as a “genuine coin flip,” noting that while Bichette could secure substantial money by staying, the state of the free-agent market might make testing the open market an attractive gamble.

The decision comes as the Mets struggle through a disappointing season with a 68-78 record, nearing official elimination from playoff contention.
