Spain weather extremes impact marine life and tourism

Extreme weather patterns in Spain are significantly altering marine ecosystems and tourism behaviors. In the Cantabrian Sea, a marine heatwave with temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius is forcing species like octopus and mackerel to seek cooler waters, disrupting local fishing and altering species distribution.

Extreme heat is also reshaping the Spanish tourism landscape. While intense heatwaves in southern and Mediterranean regions are driving some international tourists to seek cooler destinations, northern regions like Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country are seeing record visitor numbers. Research from CaixaBank indicates that approximately 14% of foreign tourists who experience extreme heat in Spain choose different destinations in subsequent years, often preferring cooler climates. This shift is leading to a change in travel calendars, with increased demand for stays in July and September rather than August.
