New York Harbor boat capsizes near Liberty Island, killing mother and baby

A 22-foot Bayliner speedboat capsized in New York Harbor near Liberty Island on a Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia. The incident occurred around 10:25 p.m. and involved 14 people on board.

Emergency responders, including the NYPD Harbor Unit, FDNY, and the U.S. Coast Guard, conducted a large-scale rescue operation. While 12 passengers were rescued from the water with varying degrees of injury, the mother and infant were located by divers and pronounced dead after being transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn.

The boat's operator, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez of Manhattan, was arrested and faces charges of reckless endangerment. Federal prosecutors have also brought charges related to misconduct and negligence resulting in death. Authorities are currently investigating whether the vessel was operating as an illegal charter service, noting that the boat appeared to be dangerously overloaded and lacked proper safety credentials and equipment.
