Boat capsizing on Nigeria-Cameroon border kills at least 20

A passenger boat that left Garoua in northern Cameroon for the Dasin community in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria, capsized late Monday night after encountering a severe storm. The vessel was reportedly overloaded with more than 50 passengers and construction materials such as iron rods.

Local authorities confirmed at least 20 fatalities, with 18 bodies recovered and buried in Wuro Bokki village. Survivors were taken to hospitals in bordering villages of both countries, while divers and rescue teams from Nigeria and Cameroon continue searching for the missing.

Prior to departure, residents warned the operators about deteriorating weather and urged postponement, but the advice was ignored. The incident highlights the risks of informal cross‑border river transport and the ongoing cooperation between the two nations in emergency response.
