Konstanz bridge steel pipe fall triggers large water‑rescue operation
On the night of 31 July 2026, shortly after 22:00, emergency services in Konstanz responded to a 911 call reporting a possible person in the water near the old Rhein bridge. Police, fire‑brigade and the DLRG were dispatched. Multiple independent witnesses heard a heavy object fall from the bridge, producing a loud splash that initially suggested a drowning.
A thorough search of the river and surrounding area found no person. Divers recovered two items: a city‑scooter without a battery and a steel pipe roughly two metres long and 15 cm in diameter. Tests reproduced the splash, confirming the steel pipe as the source. The pipe had been flagged for corrosion a year earlier and was removed at that time to prevent hazards. The coordinated operation concluded around 00:15 on 1 August with no injuries reported.
