Boating safety: common errors and maritime rescue statistics

Boating safety remains a critical concern during the summer season. Data from the 2025 summer season shows that the Coast Guard rescued 1,367 people and 403 recreational vessels. The primary causes for these interventions included engine failures (203 cases), adverse weather conditions (83), groundings (51), and collisions (14). During that same period, authorities conducted 38,786 inspections on recreational boating, identifying 3,666 administrative offenses.

To prevent emergencies, experts advise against several common mistakes, such as navigating without checking reliable weather bulletins, operating with minimal fuel reserves, or failing to keep life jackets easily accessible. Weather monitoring is particularly vital, as conditions like the bora in the Gulf of Trieste can intensify rapidly.
