Bob Chapek addresses Disney departure and leadership in new memoir

Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek has addressed his departure from the company and his tenure in upcoming interviews and his memoir, ‘Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth’. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Chapek expressed feeling ‘let down and disillusioned’ and noted that he has not returned to Disney World since being fired in November 2022.

Chapek addressed several controversial moments from his leadership. He dismissed claims that a specific earnings call led to his dismissal as ‘an absurdity’ and stated that Disney’s response to Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit was not his work, but rather approved by Bob Iger. He also characterized his 2022 apology regarding Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law as a mistake he was ‘pushed into doing’ by unnamed higher powers.

In his memoir, Chapek also defends the 1994 sequel ‘The Return of Jafar’, which faced significant critical backlash. He argues that despite criticism from industry figures like John Lasseter, the film was a commercial success for Disney’s home video division, generating nearly $300 million in sales.
