Bob Dylan’s Live Aid comment sparked decades of pop philanthropy

In 1985, a wave of pop philanthropy emerged in response to the famine in Ethiopia. Following the efforts of Bob Geldof with Band Aid and the creation of ‘We Are The World’ by USA for Africa, the Live Aid mega-concert became a global phenomenon.

During the Live Aid broadcast in Philadelphia, Bob Dylan made an impromptu comment suggesting that a portion of the funds raised for Africa could also be used to help American farmers struggling with falling crop prices and bank foreclosures. This remark prompted country music star Willie Nelson to organize relief efforts alongside artists like Neil Young and John Cougar Mellencamp, leading to musical performances aimed at supporting rural communities in the United States.
