Los Angeles Lakers sold for record $12.5 billion to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner

The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement to be sold for a record-breaking $12.5 billion to an investment group led by Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. The transaction marks the end of Mark Walter’s ownership, which began when he purchased a majority stake from the Buss family for approximately $10 billion last year. Walter reportedly realized a $2.5 billion profit on the sale after roughly 14 months of ownership.

The deal is currently awaiting final approval from the NBA Board of Governors. While Jeanie Buss is expected to remain as the team’s governor, the new ownership group faces significant decisions regarding the franchise’s front office and roster. Speculation has emerged regarding the future of Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, and there are reports that recently retired player Chris Paul could be considered for a management role due to his close relationship with Iger.

Luka Doncic, the team’s superstar guard, was reportedly not consulted prior to the agreement but is expected to connect with the new owners via video call next week. The ownership transition follows a period of significant roster changes and infrastructure investments, including the development of new training facilities.
