Bob Pettit, NBA's first MVP and Hall of Famer, dies at 93

NBA legend and Hall of Famer Bob Pettit has died at the age of 93. His alma mater, Louisiana State University (LSU), confirmed his passing, which occurred at his home in Metairie, Louisiana. No cause of death was provided.

Pettit was a foundational figure in professional basketball, recognized as the first player in NBA history to be named Most Valuable Player (MVP), winning the award in 1956 and again in 1959. He played 11 seasons with the Hawks franchise, spanning their time in Milwaukee and St. Louis, and led the St. Louis Hawks to their only NBA championship in 1958. During that championship run, he famously scored 50 points in the decisive Game 6 against the Boston Celtics.

Throughout his career, Pettit was an 11-time All-Star and was the first player to surpass the 20,000-point milestone. He retired with career averages of 26.4 points and 16.2 rebounds per game. A pioneer of the power forward position, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970 and was named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
