Bobby Charles proposes ICE presence at Maine polling stations

Maine Republican gubernatorial nominee Bobby Charles has drawn intense criticism following remarks regarding his plan to deploy federal law enforcement at polling stations. During an event for the Maine Young Republicans, Charles stated he intends to contact Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border czar, to request the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and U.S. Marshals at voting booths a few weeks before the election.

Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree and former Secretary of State Shenna Bellows have condemned the proposal, labeling it illegal and an attempt at voter intimidation. Bellows noted that federal law enforcement is prohibited from being at the polls on Election Day. Legal experts, including those from the Brennan Center for Justice, have also indicated that sending armed federal agents to election sites to interfere with or intimidate voters violates federal and state laws.

The controversy highlights a central tension in the race, as Charles attempts to leverage immigration enforcement and election integrity to energize his base while facing backlash from Democrats and independent candidates.
