Bobby Kamwa sparks controversy in Bristol Rovers victory
Bristol Rovers forward Bobby Kamwa sparked controversy during a 5-3 Severnside derby victory against his former club, Newport County. After scoring a goal to extend the lead, the Cameroonian striker ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the traveling Newport supporters.
The celebration resulted in Kamwa receiving a yellow card and prompted a reaction from Newport fans, who pelted him with plastic bottles. Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans defended the player, noting that Kamwa’s actions were a response to the treatment he received from the opposing supporters. Evans compared the moment to famous long-distance celebrations in football history.
In the match, Fabrizio Cavegn scored a hat-trick for Bristol Rovers, alongside goals from Ben Purrington and Kamwa, to secure the win. Newport County’s goals were provided by Harrison Biggins, Shaquille Gwengwe, and Cole Jarvis.
