Bobby Petrino shapes UNC football with run‑first philosophy and four‑QB race
North Carolina offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino outlined his offensive philosophy at the Kenan Football Center, stressing that pass protection and a strong running game are the foundation for the Tar Heels. He said the team must be able to run the ball to win, whether in the red zone, to manage the clock, or to open up the passing attack.
Petrino also announced that four quarterbacks – transfers Billy Edwards Jr. and Miles O'Neill, and freshmen Au'Tori Newkirk and Travis Burgess – will compete for the starting role ahead of the season opener against TCU in Ireland. He highlighted the importance of the running back group, naming Benjamin Hall and Demon June as key rushers, and noted recent upgrades to the tight‑end position.
The new “Carolina offense” aims to blend a physical ground game with play‑action passing, building on Petrino’s experience coaching Heisman winner Lamar Jackson at Louisville and his recent stint at Arkansas.
