Bobo-Dioulasso manages market fire and new construction project

The city of Bobo-Dioulasso is managing two significant developments regarding its commercial infrastructure. First, local authorities held a consultation meeting to discuss the construction of an ultra-modern, five-story multifunctional market. The project, led by the Bureau National des Grands Projets du Burkina (BN-GPB), will span 4.5 hectares at the current Sarfalao transmitter site in Sector 17. The new facility aims to modernize local trade by providing modern sales spaces, offices, and services to boost economic attractiveness.

Simultaneously, a fire broke out in the early hours of August 25, 2026, at the Grand Marché in the Diarradougou district. The blaze primarily affected a warehouse specializing in pesticides, herbicides, and various phytosanitary products. While firefighters managed to contain the fire, the destruction of chemical substances led to the release of highly toxic materials into the environment. Laurent Kontogom, President of the Special Delegation, has issued a warning regarding potential intoxication and contamination risks, resulting in the temporary closure of nearby businesses and the establishment of a security perimeter.
