Boca Juniors reaches Copa Sudamericana last‑16 after penalty shootout win

Boca Juniors lost the first leg 1‑0 to O'Higgins in Chile before winning 1‑0 at La Bombonera, leaving the tie level 1‑1 on aggregate. The Argentine side then prevailed 4‑3 in the penalty shoot‑out, with Leandro Paredes, Miguel Merentiel, Nicolás Figal and Lautaro Blanco converting, while Tomás Aranda missed. The victory sends Boca to the round of 16 where they will meet Paraguayan club Recoleta.

Club president Juan Román Riquelme criticised the defensive lapse that allowed the opponent’s goal, saying “No te pueden hacer un gol de lateral”. Captain Leandro Paredes echoed the sentiment, stating the team was not satisfied and must raise its level. Goalkeeper Álvaro Montero was praised for his composure during the shoot‑out. The only goal in regular time was scored by O'Higgins forward Francisco González.

Boca’s next challenge will be the two‑legged tie against Recoleta, with the first leg scheduled for 11 August in Buenos Aires and the return on 19 August in Paraguay.
