Boca Juniors to restore historic Quinquela Martín mural

Boca Juniors has initiated a restoration project for the historic mural ‘El origen de la bandera de Boca’ (The Origin of the Boca Flag), located in the entrance hall of La Bombonera stadium. Painted by renowned artist Benito Quinquela Martín in 1941, the work consists of 14 wood particleboard panels and has been part of the stadium since the hall's inauguration.

The painting, which depicts the arrival of a ship with the Swedish flag—the moment the club's colors were chosen—has suffered from darkening, cracks, and deformations due to dust, stadium vibrations, and the use of unsuitable varnish. This marks the first major conservation effort since 2002.

The club plans to involve specialists and curators to ensure the preservation of the piece. In addition to the physical restoration, the project includes upgrading the hall's lighting to better showcase the mural as part of a broader structural and aesthetic renovation of the entrance area.
