Bocar Samba Dièye: The rise of a Senegalese commerce leader

Bocar Samba Dièye, a 93-year-old prominent figure in Senegalese commerce, has built a significant economic legacy starting from modest beginnings in Dakar. In 1958, Dièye began his entrepreneurial journey at the Sandaga Market with a loan of 1,500 francs, selling items such as watches and various accessories before establishing a shop in Grand-Dakar.

Following early success in retail and real estate, Dièye transitioned into the large-scale importation of cereals in 1985. Initially importing millet, he expanded his operations to include maize and rice, sourcing products from Argentina, Brazil, France, and Canada.

During the market liberalization of the late 1990s, Dièye specialized in rice importation. He reported importing 103 shipments of rice between 2000 and 2008, establishing himself as a major player in the nation's food supply sector and holding responsibilities within Unacois.
