Bocholt launches initiative to address urban fear zones

The city of Bocholt in the Münsterland region of Germany has introduced a digital platform allowing residents to report so-called ‘fear zones’ (Angsträume) online. The initiative, created through a joint effort by the CDU and Green parties in the city council, aims to improve the perceived safety of citizens.

Early reports on the website include a narrow pedestrian and cycle path along the Bocholter Aa. Residents noted that the path, situated between a derelict company wall and a steep river embankment, is extremely dark at night. While men have also reported the area, the lack of lighting has particularly impacted the sense of security for women walking alone after dark.
