Bochum emergency services respond to multiple simultaneous incidents

The Bochum fire department and emergency services faced significant organizational challenges on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, due to three major simultaneous incidents occurring within approximately one hour.

In the Wattenscheid district, a carbon monoxide leak in an attic apartment on Bochumer Straße resulted in four injuries. One individual sustained serious injuries and required treatment in a hyperbaric chamber at a hospital in Gelsenkirchen, while three others, including teenagers, suffered minor injuries. Firefighters conducted extensive measurements throughout the building, eventually decommissioning the heating system in coordination with local utilities.

In addition to the gas leak, emergency crews responded to smoke development in Hofstede and a fire at a special education school in Hiltrop. The scale of these parallel emergencies required the mobilization of all four professional fire stations in Bochum, as well as multiple volunteer fire departments and extensive ambulance services.
