Bochum maintains top ranking in Germany’s Smart City Index

The city of Bochum has maintained a leading position in Germany’s Smart City Index, ranking eighth according to the industry association Bitkom. This achievement follows five years of participation in the federal “Modellprojekte Smart Cities” program, which has provided approximately 10 million euros in funding to the city, supplemented by 5 million euros of local investment.

Key digital initiatives implemented include the BochumApp, which provides information on waste collection and local events, and smart benches equipped with mobile charging capabilities. The city has also introduced a document output box to allow citizens to collect official documents from the town hall without waiting. Additionally, sensors are being utilized to monitor climate data and water quality in green spaces.

Despite these advancements, officials acknowledge significant room for improvement. Denes Kücük, Chief Digital Officer, noted that the public sector still faces a gap in service quality compared to large private corporations. While many citizens appreciate the time saved through online services, some residents remain skeptical regarding the security of digital transactions.
