Bodegas La Aurora wins top prize at Paxera de Montemayor wine competition

The first edition of the Paxera de Montemayor National Competition for Sweet Wines, Special Wines, and Vermouths has concluded in Montemayor, Spain. The competition featured over 50 entries from various Spanish regions, including Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and Castilla-La Mancha, alongside a strong representation from the Montilla-Moriles region.

Bodegas La Aurora’s Pedro Ximénez Solera 1981 was named the best wine of the competition. This natural sweet wine is made from 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes and has undergone an average aging process of 30 years in American oak casks.

Other top honors included four ‘Gran Oro’ awards. In addition to La Aurora, the Gran Oro recipients were Humboldt Tinto Dulce 2001 from Bodegas Insulares de Tenerife, Doblas PX from Bodegas Doblas, and Pérez Barquero Vermouth from Bodegas Pérez Barquero, which was recognized as the best vermouth.

The event was organized by the Montemayor City Council in collaboration with the Montilla-Moriles and Vinagre de Montilla-Moriles Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Regulatory Council. A professional panel of 18 tasters, led by José Luis Murcia of the Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers (AEPEV), evaluated the entries.
