Bodensee beer gardens draw crowds along Germany's lake shore

The Stärr‑Schorsch beer garden in Friedrichshafen‑Fischbach, situated directly on the Bodensee shore, has been a local favourite since its founding in 1948 by fisherman and innkeeper Georg “Schorsch” Stärr, who gained fame for riding his horse over the frozen lake in 1963. Now operated by the third generation, Stefan Stärr, the garden offers drinks, snacks, and a shallow lakeside area popular with families and dogs.

Further up the lake, the Wirtshaus am Gehrenberg in Markdorf provides a picturesque view of the Säntis peak and the sparkling lake, attracting visitors to its traditional cuisine, baked bread, and regional beers. Both venues emphasize a relaxed atmosphere without loud music, offering a classic Bavarian beer‑garden experience.
