Bodhana Sivanandan becomes youngest Woman Grandmaster at age 11

Bodhana Sivanandan, an 11-year-old chess prodigy from northwest London, has become the youngest player in history to achieve the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) confirmed the milestone following her performance at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Representing England, Sivanandan played all 11 rounds on the top board, earning eight points. This achievement secured her third and final WGM norm and also earned her a second International Master (IM) norm. Her record surpasses the previous benchmark held by Kateryna Lagno, who achieved the title at age 12.

Sivanandan, who taught herself the game via YouTube during the COVID-19 pandemic, has seen a rapid rise in the sport. She previously became Britain’s youngest female chess champion and the youngest person to represent England in any international sport at age nine. She expressed her desire to ‘keep making history’ following her success.
