Bodrum women's knitting project to create decorative street shades
The Bodrum Municipality's Directorate of Women and Family Services, in collaboration with Atölye Mai, has completed the first stage of the ‘Bodrum Women are Knitting for the Street’ project. Local women spent a month knitting 1,400 colorful motifs at home, with neighbors, and in workshops.
These motifs are being assembled into decorative shade structures to serve as an aesthetic alternative to standard awnings and tarpaulins in urban spaces. The first implementation is planned for Turgutreis Sevgi Yolu, starting with a 50-meter section and eventually expanding to 150 meters. The durability of the sample application will be tested under various conditions, with plans to use the shades in summer and store them during winter.
Bodrum Mayor Tamer Mandalinci expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating that it aims to support women's participation in production while providing a unique visual identity to the streets of Bodrum.
