Body temperature regulation and its impact on sleep quality
Maintaining optimal body temperature is a critical factor in sleep quality and the onset of sleep. Warming the extremities, such as wearing thin socks, can facilitate sleep by promoting vasodilation. This process allows heat to exchange at the skin's surface, helping the body achieve the necessary drop in internal temperature. A 2018 study involving six volunteers suggested that wearing socks could lead to falling asleep approximately 7.5 minutes faster and increasing sleep duration by 32 minutes, though results vary based on individual comfort and room temperature.
Conversely, during heatwaves, managing heat becomes a challenge. While sleeping naked is an option, it is not a universal solution for staying cool. Effective perspiration requires evaporation to regulate temperature; therefore, wearing loose, lightweight, and breathable fabrics may be more effective than nudity, as these materials can help absorb moisture and prevent the uncomfortable sensation of dampness on the skin.
