BOE seeks secondary supplier role for Apple iPad Air OLED panels

Apple is considering BOE as a secondary supplier for OLED panels in future iPad Air models, potentially alongside primary supplier Samsung Display. The Chinese manufacturer is reportedly developing these panels at its B12 facility in Chongqing, utilizing a sixth-generation OLED production line.

Before securing orders, BOE must pass Apple’s technical and industrial qualification process. A decision regarding this qualification is expected in November or December. Even if successful, BOE’s initial shipments may be limited to the Chinese market or refurbished devices, while Samsung Display is expected to lead the initial production ramp-up between late 2026 and early 2027.

The anticipated OLED iPad Air models will come in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. To manage costs, Apple is expected to use a hybrid OLED architecture featuring a single RGB emissive layer and a 60Hz refresh rate, distinguishing it from the more expensive tandem OLED technology used in the iPad Pro.
