Boeing 737 MAX 10 certification delayed by software issue
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has delayed the certification of the Boeing 737 MAX 10 due to a software issue identified during go-around maneuvers. The problem occurs when a crew's trajectory modification during a failed landing attempt can cause certain automated flight guidance to become unavailable, potentially increasing pilot workload during a critical phase of flight.
Boeing has notified operators and is developing a permanent software update, which may be accompanied by additional pilot training. While the certification of the MAX 10 is paused pending a full evaluation, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that there is no current indication of a safety risk and no necessity to ground the existing 737 MAX fleet.
The FAA is convening a Corrective Action Review Board to analyze the situation. Airline officials have indicated they do not expect the board to find a significant safety risk, suggesting the MAX 10 could potentially receive certification later this month if approved.
