Boeing and Northrop Grumman test P-8A and MQ-4C Triton interoperability

Boeing and Northrop Grumman have successfully demonstrated machine-to-machine interoperability between the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and the MQ-4C Triton uncrewed maritime surveillance aircraft. The jointly funded laboratory test validated a manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) concept designed to enhance maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, and anti-surface warfare.

During the simulation, P-8A operators issued mission tasks using the Universal Command and Control Interface (UCI). This allowed the MQ-4C Triton to autonomously plan and execute transits, employ sensors, process data onboard using artificial intelligence, and transmit findings back to the P-8A via satellite relay.

The demonstration utilized Open Mission Systems (OMS) and UCI standards rather than custom point-to-point interfaces. This open architecture is intended to reduce operator workload, accelerate decision-making, and allow different platforms to operate as a single distributed system. The companies noted that such standardized interfaces could enable future collaboration between various U.S. and allied systems.
