Boeing begins JDAM Long Range production as Australia orders AIM-260 missiles

Boeing has commenced serial production of the JDAM Long Range (JDAM LR) kits, which provide precision strike capabilities at distances exceeding 555 kilometers (300 nautical miles). Following successful test flights off the coast of California using an F/A-18 carrier aircraft, the $75 million preliminary production contract aims to offer a cost-effective alternative to advanced cruise missiles like the JASSM. This standoff capability is intended to allow aircraft to strike targets while remaining outside the range of enemy air defense systems.

In a separate defense development, Australia has become the first international customer for the American AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM). Developed by Lockheed Martin, this long-range air-to-air missile is designed to replace the AIM-120 AMRAAM. The Australian contract is valued at approximately $480 million USD (736 million AUD) and is part of the Royal Australian Air Force's modernization efforts.
