Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS provides critical aerial surveillance
The E-3 Sentry, also known as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System), is a specialized aircraft developed by Boeing based on the Boeing 707-320B airframe. Used by the United States Air Force, it serves as a critical tool for aerial and maritime surveillance in all weather conditions.
The aircraft is distinguished by a large, rotating radar dome mounted on struts above the fuselage. This radar disc, approximately 9 meters in diameter, provides 360-degree coverage and can monitor an airspace radius of over 250 miles (400 km). By operating at high altitudes, the system avoids terrain interference, allowing it to detect aircraft, low-flying missiles, and naval vessels from great distances.
Beyond reconnaissance, the E-3 Sentry functions as a command and control hub. Onboard specialists process data in real-time to provide tactical information to fighter jets, ships, and command centers, acting as a ‘flying brain’ or ‘conductor’ for air operations.
