Boeing MH-139A Grey Wolf reaches initial operational capability

The United States Air Force has declared Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the Boeing MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter. This multi-mission aircraft is designed to secure intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) fields, which form the land-based component of the U.S. nuclear triad.

Developed through a partnership between Boeing and Leonardo, the Grey Wolf is based on the AW139 platform. The aircraft is intended to replace the aging Bell UH-1N Iroquois, which has been in service for over five decades. Compared to its predecessor, the MH-139A is nearly 50% faster and can transport approximately twice the number of personnel.

The deployment will support security operations across vast territories, including missile fields in Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Beyond nuclear security, the helicopter will be utilized for search and rescue, disaster response, medical evacuations, and VIP transport in the United States and Japan. The Air Force has contracted at least 34 units, with a total requirement of approximately 84 aircraft.
