Boeing to develop F-47 stealth fighter for Indo-Pacific
Boeing has been awarded the engineering and manufacturing contract for the F-47, a sixth-generation stealth fighter designed to ensure United States aerial supremacy in the Indo-Pacific region. Developed under the ‘Next Generation Air Dominance’ (NGAD) initiative, the aircraft is intended to succeed the F-22.
The F-47 is engineered to operate over the vast distances of the Pacific Ocean, featuring a projected speed exceeding Mach 2 and an operational range of over 1,850 kilometers. This increased range is intended to provide greater deployment flexibility and reduce reliance on aerial refueling, which is considered a vulnerability in conflict zones.
Key technical features include advanced stealth capabilities, integrated mission systems, and high-end sensors to counter sophisticated air defenses and long-range missiles. The program also integrates electronic warfare tools and ‘Collaborative Combat Aircraft’ (CCA) drones that work in tandem with the manned fighter. While the initial goal for the first flight is set for 2028, the timeline remains subject to technical milestones and testing results. High acquisition costs for the planned 185 aircraft may impact the Air Force's procurement goals.
