Boeing wins up to $2 billion US Space Force contract for two narrowband satellites

The U.S. Space Force selected Boeing for the next phase of its Mobile User Objective System Service Life Extension (MUOS SLE) program. The contract, valued at up to $2 billion, calls for two narrowband ultra‑high‑frequency (UHF) communications satellites, with the first delivery planned for 2031.

The satellites are intended to sustain and improve secure voice and essential‑data links for military users on the ground, at sea and in the air, especially in environments where terrain, dense urban structures or severe weather degrade other communications. Boeing will build the satellites on its existing 702MP spacecraft production line, aiming to increase capacity, reduce interference and enhance overall connectivity for global operations.

Boeing executives highlighted the importance of reliable UHF communications, quoting Sam Greaves: “For the people who depend on this connectivity, the need is clear: secure communication that works in demanding conditions.” The award extends Boeing’s role in U.S. defense satellite communications as the Space Force seeks to keep the MUOS constellation operational and modernized for the next decade.
