Boeing workers strike after rejecting contract offers

Boeing workers have initiated strike actions following the rejection of contract proposals by major unions. At factories near Seattle and other locations, approximately 33,000 machinists represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers walked off the job. The strike follows a vote where 94.6% of members rejected a tentative contract that offered a 25% wage increase over four years, while 96% approved the work stoppage.

In a separate labor tension, members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) have also signaled readiness for industrial action. Members representing engineers, scientists, and technical staff overwhelmingly authorized strike action if negotiations do not yield significant improvements. SPEEA members cited concerns regarding eroding job security, offshoring, safety standards, and salaries failing to keep pace with inflation.

The labor unrest is expected to halt the production of Boeing’s best-selling commercial aircraft, though it is not expected to impact existing commercial flight schedules. These disruptions come as the aerospace manufacturer faces ongoing financial and reputational challenges stemming from manufacturing issues and federal investigations.
