Boekholt-O’Sullivan proposes mandatory register for Dutch real estate agents
Dutch Minister of Housing Elanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan has announced plans to introduce a mandatory professional register for real estate agents. Under this proposal, agents would be required to register to practice their profession; failure to do so, or removal from the register, would prohibit them from working in the sector.
The move follows concerns regarding the lack of transparency and integrity in the current purchasing process. The Minister noted that existing industry codes of conduct, managed by organizations such as the Nederlandse Vereniging van Makelaars, have lacked sufficient enforcement. This lack of oversight has been highlighted by hundreds of reports of misconduct, including instances where buyers were not shown bidding logs.
The proposed regulatory framework will be based on three core principles: transparency, correct information, and equal treatment. Consumers will be able to submit complaints to an existing disputes committee. The Minister is currently working on the specific details, including whether the rules will extend to the rental market, while aiming to prevent significant increases in service costs.
