Boeotia farmers transition from cereals to quinoa cultivation
In Boeotia, Greece, producers are transitioning from traditional cereals to quinoa cultivation. Anastasios Thanasenas, a farmer from Kaparelli, reported successful results from his first quinoa harvest, which utilized primarily non-irrigated land.
Thanasenas noted that production exceeded 200 kg per stremma. He highlighted that quinoa offers significant economic advantages over traditional cereals, including lower production costs and a reduced need for agrochemicals. Compared to crops like onions and potatoes, quinoa presents lower financial risks due to more stable pricing structures.
To mitigate economic and psychological risks, Thanasenas intends to double his quinoa acreage in the upcoming growing season. He emphasized the importance of contract farming, specifically through his partnership with Markou A.E., which allows producers to know sale prices in advance, providing greater financial security and planning capabilities.
