Bogong moth swarms migrate through Canberra and NSW
Swarms of bogong moths are currently migrating through the Australian Capital Territory and eastern New South Wales. While the large numbers of insects have caused concern among Canberra residents regarding potential damage to clothing and linens, experts suggest the phenomenon is a positive ecological sign.
Dr. Benedict Keaney, a professor from the Australian National University, stated that the moths are simply passing through to reach the mountain ranges for summer hibernation. He noted that the migration is being aided by low-level jet streams, which carry the insects across the country.
Dr. Keaney advised that the swarms could continue until the beginning of November. He emphasized the importance of the moths to the local ecosystem, particularly as a food source for bird species such as magpies, noting that recent years had seen concerningly low numbers of the insects.
