Bogotá advances transit with cable‑car tests and new bus seat types

The TransMiCable cable‑car system in the San Cristóbal district of Bogotá entered its final operational test phase on 23 June 2026, with 144 of the 148 cabins running between the Senderos de Altamira and Portal 20 de Julio stations. The tests, overseen by Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán and mobility officials, will last about three weeks before an international safety certification. The cable‑car is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year, cutting travel times from roughly 45 minutes to 10 minutes, serving about 400 000 residents, moving around 35 000 passengers daily and transporting up to 4 000 people per hour in each direction. Each cabin seats ten, includes wheelchair access and space for folding bicycles, and the stations will be equipped with solar panels.

At the same time, TransMilenio is rolling out new electric buses in Bogotá that feature three colour‑coded seat categories: red seats for general use, blue seats for passengers with special needs such as pregnant women, small children, the elderly or disabled, and newly introduced aqua‑coloured seats reserved for caregivers accompanying those passengers. The electric fleet also offers Wi‑Fi, USB ports, information screens and safety cameras.

These initiatives aim to improve mobility, reduce travel times and enhance passenger experience across the city.
