Bogotá airspace redesign studied by Aerocivil, Airbus, and Avianca

The Aeronáutica Civil, Airbus, and Avianca have signed a technical cooperation agreement to study a potential redesign of the airspace over Bogotá. The initiative aims to analyze new routes and procedures to manage the increasing volume of flights and passengers at El Dorado International Airport.

The project focuses heavily on operational safety. Before any new routes or procedures are implemented, authorities will conduct rigorous studies to evaluate technical conditions and associated risks. This move comes as El Dorado faces significant pressure; passenger numbers have grown from 11.8 million in 2006 to over 45 million in recent years.

While ground-level expansions, such as the recent enlargement of the air bridge and immigration areas, have been implemented to alleviate pressure, the new cooperation agreement addresses the need to optimize the air traffic organization and the utilization of available airspace above the capital.
