Bogotá Animal Welfare Program Registers 121 Community Pets

The Instituto Distrital de Protección y Bienestar Animal (IDPYBA) launched the “Vecino Buena Pata” strategy during World Stray Dog Day to promote collective care of stray dogs and cats in Bogotá. The initiative has registered 121 community animals, of which 47 have received official verification and distinctive identification collars. A network of “Vecinos Buena Papa” has signed care agreements, committing to feed, shelter, protect, and ensure harmonious coexistence with the animals in 20 neighborhoods.

IDPYBA provides support through animal‑behavior experts, preventive medical care, and emergency response. Mobile units conduct free sterilization, vaccination, and microchip identification across vulnerable sectors. The program aligns with broader municipal animal‑welfare policies, including adoption drives and public awareness events such as Expopet 2026, aiming to reduce the number of unprotected dogs on the streets through shared neighborhood responsibility.
