Bogotá authorities issue earthquake response and preparedness guidelines

Following the earthquake on August 10, 2026, Bogotá authorities have issued guidelines to assist residents with housing, insurance, and safety preparedness.

The Bogotá District Habitat Secretariat (SDHT) provided regulatory guidance for property owners and tenants regarding lease contracts and insurance policies. Affected individuals should file insurance claims directly with their providers. For properties under horizontal property laws, Law 675 of 2001 requires earthquake coverage for common areas, with indemnification funds prioritized for building repairs. Regarding leases, the Civil Code allows for contract termination if a property is totally destroyed, or rent reduction if structural damage prevents proper use. The SDHT clarified it lacks the judicial authority to nullify contracts and recommends mediation or civil courts for disputes. Additionally, the Secretariat noted that earthquake events do not exempt residents from paying common administration fees, which are necessary for repairs.

Simultaneously, the District Institute for Risk Management and Climate Change (IDIGER) released a three-step preparedness guide for households. The protocol encourages residents to evaluate building structures for compliance with seismic resistance regulations, establish family emergency plans with designated meeting points, and prepare emergency kits. IDIGER also recommends conducting drills at least twice a year to practice safety techniques.
