Bogotá faces blackout risk due to transmission delays
Colombian Minister of Finance Miguel Gómez has warned that Bogotá is facing a significant risk of blackouts. The warning, issued before the Fifth Commission of Congress, attributes the danger to insufficient transmission infrastructure rather than a lack of energy generation.
Specifically, the delay of a 1,000-kilometer transmission line from the Caribbean coast—stalled by approximately 1,000 consultations—has left the capital vulnerable. Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán supported this assessment, noting that the current system lacks the capacity to meet rising demand in the central region, particularly during peak consumption periods.
To address the crisis, the Executive branch plans to present an urgent bill to secure 1.2 trillion pesos for energy supply measures. Additionally, the government has proposed utilizing resources from the General Royalty System to modernize the nation's transmission networks.
