Bogotá launches Latin America’s first 123 emergency line for veterinary incidents

Since 2024, Bogotá’s emergency telephone 123 has been expanded to handle veterinary emergencies, making it the first service of its kind in Latin America. The program lets citizens report injured animals by calling the line, providing precise location and condition details.

Operators record the incident, give immediate safety advice, and forward the report to the Centro de Comando, Control, Comunicaciones y Cómputo (C4). C4 classifies the case as a veterinary emergency and notifies the Instituto Distrital de Protección y Bienestar Animal (IDPYBA), which dispatches the nearest veterinary brigade. On‑site teams administer first aid, stabilize the animal, and transport it to a specialized care centre, while the coordinated system ensures a rapid, effective response to protect animal welfare.
