Bogotá celebrates 488th anniversary with cultural events and Metro construction
Bogotá celebrated its 488th anniversary on 6 August 2026, marking 488 years since the traditional founding date of 6 August 1538 by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada.
The city organized a month‑long program of cultural, artistic, sports and recreational activities throughout August. Officials noted the anniversary also serves to review the city's historical narrative and its growth into Colombia’s political, economic and cultural capital.
At the same time, Bogotá is undergoing major urban transformation, highlighted by the construction of the first line of the Bogotá Metro and other mobility and infrastructure projects. The founding is traditionally linked to a first mass celebrated by Fray Domingo de las Casas, and the official site of the original settlement is identified near Parque Santander rather than the popular Chorro de Quevedo.
