Bogotá officials address urban modernization and mobility challenges

In Bogotá, local officials are addressing challenges regarding urban modernization and public order. Councilman David Saavedra highlighted the importance of a tax pact to fund city improvements, noting that while voluntary tax contributions previously saw high participation under Antanas Mockus, recent corruption scandals have eroded public trust. Saavedra emphasized the need for technological upgrades, such as smart street lighting equipped with security cameras and disaster sensors, to bring the capital in line with other major cities.

Separately, Councilman Juan David Quintero raised concerns regarding mobility and civic culture. He denounced the misuse of elevators intended for people with reduced mobility, reporting instances where electric motorcycle riders used these facilities at pedestrian bridges, occasionally obstructing access for others. Quintero called for the Ministry of Transport to establish clearer regulations and enforcement for electric vehicles to prevent what he described as mobility anarchy.
